DIY STITCHED PUMPKIN

October 18, 2014

So here is another great idea for pumpkins everyone will be jealous of! Stitched pumpkins! why not put your sewing skills to good use on a pumpkin? I thought that this would be really difficult, as the skin might be too tough to get a needle through, but I was wrong it was so easy!

DIY STITCHED PUMPKIN.

YOU WILL NEED:

  • A Pumpkin

  • Large thick needle with a large eye.

  • Embroidery thread or string.

  • Knife

  • Spoon

  • Pliers

STEP ONE:

Use a sharp knife to cut a hole in the top of the pumpkin to make a lid, I made an octagonal shape.

Take your lid out so that you can get to the inside of the pumpkin.

STEP TWO:

Using a spoon, scoop out the inside of the pumpkin. Be sure to take out all of the seeds.

I scraped away at the walls of the pumpkin to take away the flesh and make them a little bit thinner.

STEP THREE:

Thread your needle with embroidery thread or string.  If using embroidery thread double it up so it is thicker, no need to do this with string as it will already be thick enough.

Try to find the biggest thickest needle you can. I found that the type you get free or in children’s sewing kits are great.

STEP FOUR:

Tie a knot at the end of your thread and sew from the inide of the pumpkin to the outside.

I decided to stay simple and sew stars onto my pumpkin. It can be tricky finding exactly where to push the needle through to get the stitch that you want, but after a few times pushing is through in the wrong I eventually got the hang of it.

Continue stitching through the pumpkin to get the desired stitches, I found that the pumpkin juice does make the needle slippery and hard to pull through so used a pair of pliers to help pull it.

STEP FIVE:

I added some silver thread and some white string to create a rune style pumpkin.

STEP SIX:

Once complete tie off any loose ends inside the pumpkin and replace the lid.

STEP SEVEN:

Pop your pumpkin on the doorstep to ward of evil spirits and show everyone your fabulous work!

Good at cross stitch? Why not do an oversized cross stitch design on your pumpkin?
